Top Tips on Hiring an Interior Designer

General News

When it comes to hiring an Interior Designer, what do you need to look for and consider? We spoke to six Interior Designers we’ve collaborated on projects with for their top tips on what to look for. From the brief and vision through to deliverance and and after service care, watch our latest video for an insight from the designers themselves.

Build rapport

Synergy is very important when choosing an Interior Designer to work with on your project. You need to form a trusting working relationship with someone you can get on with and are able to share your vision with. Research and talk to more than one to build up rapport. Word of mouth is often a great way to find a designer, however when designing a home it’s a personal process you’re going through, so you need to be able to work with someone you trust.

Be prepared to listen

You will have your own vision, but be prepared to listen and understand different ideas to get the most from the experience of working with an Interior Designer. An experienced designer will have built up knowledge on how to enhance your brief and space. You don’t always have to follow their advice, but it may open up possibilities you had not considered which will add scope to your scheme.

Research based on your project

When researching, try to identify your design style and what suits you, which is often driven by personality, the style the designer can achieve and also budget. If it’s a small project or a large project the type of designer you will choose will most likely be different. It’s important to look at previous work from the designer, however they should be able to work to the client brief rather then their own style.

Quality control and after service care

Understanding how the designer sources products and the quality control is a factor to consider when hiring an interior designer, and important to discuss with them when you meet. After service care is also critical. Years after a project, you may need to follow up with the designer for advice on any fixtures, fittings or adjustments needed, so you need to ensure the after service care is there to support you.
