Our flagship Lucca range of architectural uplights has been refreshed for 2024. This update builds upon the success of the existing family with a particular focus on circularity, robustness and quality.

Senior Product Designer, Alexander Leck talks us through the changes that have been made to the Lucca 30 and 40 uplights and steplights.

ROBUSTNESS

Condensation build-up on exterior fittings has now been minimised with a clever new
ProVentR membrane we have introduced to the range. This allows air to cycle in and out of the fitting, mitigating the build up of condensation over time. This helps with both maintaining the clean aesthetic and avoids potential issues. The ProVentR allows airflow through the fitting but not water.

These fittings come with a 5 year internal and 3 years external warranty as standard.

QUALITY

We have improved the optical packages of all products within the range, boosting CRI up to 98Ra and increasing delivered lumen outputs by up to 44%.

A broader range of standard beam angles makes this family as versatile as possible for you to use in your projects.

We have also maintained our signature deep baffles across the new range, ensuring that we continue to offer market leading visual comfort without sacrificing performance.

CIRCULARITY

We have reevaluated every original design choice we made to be true to the circular design principles.

Permanent adhesives have now been replaced with mechanical alternatives, which allow for ongoing repairs and upgrades throughout the product’s service life. This is part of our repair, reuse, repurpose, and as a last resort, recycle policy.

This new mechanical cable gland is rated to both IP65 and IP67, contributing significantly to our TM66 rating of 2.4. The TM66 score of 2.4 is independently verified by the LIA and shows a “definite/substantial progress towards circularity”.

APPLICATIONS

Design Director Luke Thomas shares with us some ideas of how to use this versatile product:-

The Lucca uplights can be used to provide dramatic accent light and create a focus on key features. They can be used to create a theatrical layer of light to differentiate and elevate any lighting scheme. Here are some of my top usages for these uplights:-

1. Uplight thresholds and architraves

Solution: Luccas are a great tool to create a framing effect for a view to adjoining rooms, to an exterior space or to an architrave around a door.

Consideration: Think about the viewing angles. Do you need to use a glare cowl to reduce light spill?

2. Uplight texture or a curved wall

Solution: Create a dramatic effect by positioning Luccas close to the wall to skim light up the texture or curve.

Consideration: This works best if there are no obstructions such as skirting boards to deflect the light. Think about any undulations on the surface so you position the fittings to maximise these.

3. Uplight architectural features

Solution: Columns, beams and fireplaces make excellent architectural features to uplight.

Considerations: Think about the desired effect you are trying to create – position closer for a stronger effect and for a softer effect, place further from surface being illuminated.

4. Window reveals

Solution: Ideal to uplight window reveals in both contemporary projects and heritage projects where you might uplight the shutter boxes.

Considerations: Coordination required if using with window treatments to ensure this application is successful.

5. Steps

Solution: Ideal for skimming light across steps as it will bring surface material to life. It is best to light every tread or every other tread.

Considerations: Do not use where your viewing angle is such that you will see into the fitting. Consider using the asymmetric lens, which will direct light onto the step below.
