Lamp Phase Out – The Facts

13.09.2011

The European Commission has ruled to stop the sale of certain types of inefficient lamps for household use in a series of dates to 2016.

These bans are based upon a voluntary approach from retailers up to the deadline in place from the European Union.

The lamps that this currently affects are those most commonly found within decorative fittings such as table lamps and pendants.

Stage Date The following lamps will be phased out
1 1 September 2009 All frosted lamps (apart from Energy Class A) as well as clear incandescent lamps of 100w or above
2 1 September 2010 Clear incandescent lamps over 75w
3 1 September 2011 Clear incandescent lamps over 60w
4 1 September 2012 All incandescent lamps

Will this affect my John Cullen fittings?

No, currently all John Cullen products are exempt from the current guidelines on efficiency.  Tungsten halogen lamps that are usually found in ceiling recessed downlights such as the Polestar are not included in the directive until 2016.  John Cullen is working closely with lamp manufacturers to improve their efficiency and are on target to produce a compliant lamp by 2016.

Our incandescent fittings eg Box and Small Box Lantern will only be affected from 1st September 2012, however John Cullen currently have many lamp options that can be easily used to update these fittings.

What is the alternative?

There are many options available to the consumer. There are two lamp types to choose from which can easily be fitted into either Edison screw or bayonet lamp holders, which you can use as a direct replacement for your incandescent lamp: energy-saving halogen lamps which save up to approximately 30 % energy and compact fluorescent lamps which save up to approximately 80 % energy.

Energy-efficient lamps achieve the same output of light as incandescent lamps, using less electricity; therefore there are different wattages for an equal light output comparison.
